Classic Americana: The Pendleton shirt
One of my first loves (not counting Brooks). Not what they used to be. I still love the way Rock Hudson looked in his. I think they're now made in Mexico, and the ones John Simons sells are all right. Just all right. My first was a button-down and I wore it until it no longer fitted. I had to have the collar repaired but I miss it still. I believe it was once a surfers' favourite. The company also made some fabulous lined plaid jackets with poppers.

Nice things. As a kid these were one of my first obsessions with Americana. It was possible to buy wonderful board shirts from Flip and Chelsea Antique Market by the bin-liner load. Teaming a darker plaid (buttoned-up) Pendleton with olive or brown tweed is a winter signature for me and invokes a feeling of mellow wellbeing: warm, dark and visually rich. 'Yes' to the hint of white t-shirt peeking out behind the buttoned-up collar.
I can face the idea of buying the newer ones but would have to go through the rigmarole of replacing the plastic buttons with pearloid ones. Who has the time?
The newer plaids lack much of the complexity and personality of vintage examples but I've always fancied getting the plain black shirt (!)
