Pastel seems increasingly nasty; at least to my sensitive eye. Ivy requires, if not mud, then muted: the grey and the green. And yet - paradoxically - when we wear Madras we really let fly. Rule of thumb: one step backwards. Getting the shading right is vital. I love to match a cashmere jumper in one shade of grey with socks of another. And yet grey would never do for a shirt - one would look like a schoolboy - how is that?

Love the Chris_H look of Madras under Shetland - All you get is a flash of colour at collar & cuffs (If it's a long sleeve). Add some five pocket needlecords... A top look!
