Re: God Bless Anglo Ivy -

A chum informs that Pete Townshend was on Radio Four yesterday talking about clothes & the subtlety of 'Mod'. No specific mention of Austins & Ivy League, but PT suddenly has clobber on his mind.

Can I guess that that mate of his I was chatting to has had that conversation with him then?

Or it's just a coincidence?

Whatever, it was not a bad soundbite, I am told. Short hair, subtlty, and also 'not looking like a Mod' - He was talking about some guy who you'd only know was a Mod if you saw him in a crowd of Mods outside a Mod club. See him dressed the same in his day job (He worked in a bank) and you would never make the connection, so subtle was he. Short hair, but worn in a French Crew, and an attention to tailoring details.

Anybody else hear it? (I didn't)

Best -

^ Sounds more than a coincidence to me, Jim re: PT with clothing on his mind. Wonder if its available as a "Listen Again" on the Radio 4 website? Depends on what programme it was aired on.  I'll have to check.

Just had a look but I can't deduce what programme it would have been on - or if it is actually available online. Maybe a quick Google might find it. Would your chum remember, Jim?

OK - Yesterday it was on 'Pick of the Week' on Radio Four - Don't know from what it was picked.

It could just be a coincidence. But if not, then it's good story, eh?

Top Rank Watford

New penny Watford

Above Burtons Uxbridge

Oldfield Greenford (The Who played there too but before my time)

Birds Nest Harrow

There was another in Kingsbury in a pub

It was all suburban in my day. An earlier generation would have headed into town - which we rarely did unless we had failed to gate crash a party.

Re: God Bless Anglo Ivy -

More from those who were actually there & who know -

"Saw Pete Townshend wearing a bronze/gold tonik mohair suit at the Watford Trade Union Hall, circa. 1965.  PT generally was the only one who wore suits on stage. The others casual.  Although John Entwhistle did make the effort. Roger was an Ex Ted. Blokes would look at what PT was wearing, although PT would admit that he used to look at the crowd to see what “the Faces” were wearing. A case of “Art copying Life”. IMO the way it should be.

Friends of mine spoke to him about the same time in a guitar shop in Charing X Road and they said that he was wearing a hessian jacket. Bless them, in their defence, it was probably hop sack jacket from Austin’s just around the corner in Shaftesbury Ave."
