Billy Adams !!!! etc...

Scroll down to the very bottom pic -

http://oldlady1.tripod.com/dexys/dsmd.html

I was in The Ivy Shop up Richmond Hill Christmas '87 talking to the then manager Ian (And God bless him for putting up with me...)
And he mentioned he'd had the DMR boys in, closely followed by their fans who proceeded to photograph the chair upon which Kevin Rowland had sat to try on loafers (A lovely old worn Windsor chair, btw, but a bit hard on the bum).
Life eh?

I once tried to talk to Ian about Jimmy Smith. He replied that he thought the place for an organ was in church... There was an old green & gold sign up on the wall near the till which said 'Prayer changes things' so, imagining that I'd found an in-road into chatting to the great man, I asked him if he liked Mahalia Jackson. No, he replied.
... Nicest man I ever met (after Frankie Howerd and Aubron Waugh).

Vote now to stop me posting more of my golden memories.

Miles.

Re: Billy Adams !!!! etc...

A bloke I know knew a girl who had once said 'Hello' to Terry Hall.
'You don't know me', he replied.

...

I once went up to Nina Simone with some friends & said I was sorry for bothering her.
She said 'Well you needn't be' and walked off.

...

Everyone's a winner, eh?

Re: Billy Adams !!!! etc...

I once walked past J.Simons and they'd taken all the shirts out of the display cabinet in the window and put in a packet of shortbread biscuits ('Walkers' with the Royal Stewart tartan wrapping) & a mini fire extinguisher for a laugh and then left it like that all night...
1989 that must have been.

...

My father used to say that "Sweatshirt" was the most disgusting word he'd ever heard.

That DMR LP art I've never seen, was that an international release?  Holy crap, that is some serious "Trad". It's more American than American...

It's akin maybe to the fact that those who appear to be the most English of gentlemen are always foreign born.  Takes an outsider to hit every note.  All at the same time, apparently.

Interestingly Kevin Rowlands the DMR frontman was an Irish immigrant too.

Edit: Not sure about the record's release.

"Walk on the Wild Side" by Jimmy Smith was a hit when I was in college. Imagine a record of that quality getting any airtime now? Well, maybe a "rap' version. (Rap Music-an oxymoron)

Re: Billy Adams !!!! etc...

The record was a lot better than the movie.

Walk on the Wild Side by Jimmy Smith (a TV video-trio, not the big band version that was the hit record) is available on YouTube and Google Video.

Re: Billy Adams !!!! etc...

Mr. Smith's take on the 'Mission Impossible' theme was so good that Lalo Shiffrin (sp?) preferred it to his own original version.
... Jimmy is big in Japan too... God rest his funky soul.

Re: Billy Adams !!!! etc...

Somehow, Jimmy Smith and trio made fine music wearing suits and ties and with no (at least visible) tatoos and piercings.
