I'm going to get down the liabary, see what i can lay claim to. It's funny really after all those years i think they went over in the 17th century and i'm still no further away from the family village. Maybe my lot didnt travel too well,i certainly don't care for it. I might go and pay muffy as visit now though! I've always like the look of maine in the fall.

What surprised me, was the amount of travel that was going in the 19th century and people marrying each other from all over the UK. I had Londoners, Cornish men, Lincolnshire, Irish, scousers and Cheshire folk.

What made me chuckle as well, was that my grandmother always fancied herself as a bit posh and all the men in her family had been gentleman on the Batterton side. Well, the founding father of that particular dynasty was the 12 year old waif who had come over from Ireland in 1844 on his own with no family who had probably all starved to death.

I managed to get back to a wheelright in 1715 on one branch of the family. The sister of one of my ancestors married the inventor of the Whippet tank in WWI, but sadly my ancestor was the runt of the family, the black sheep who went to work on the Manchester Ship Canal in lieu of becomming a gentleman farmer.

I haven't researched my mum's side of the family, which are O'Brien's which clearly are Liverpool Irish stock, but I should get back into it.

Re: Just Not Good Enough -

Sonofstan I was with the Irish Army Rangers as a liaison officer so funnily enough I did know that.  The expression upon hearing of my family lineage was "In Ireland you would be regarded as royalty".  The gentleman who told me that also proudly told me his grandfather was involved in Michael Collin's ambush.  Best assignment I can say I ever had and wasn't in Eire.

As I have four spinal injuries, including the brain stem, a five year old girl can beat me in an arm wrestle. The question is, One For Bop, can you beat a  five year old girl in an arm wrestle? :0P

Muffy answered the question herself - and she also managed through in a few lines about her family lineage too:
Addendum, in response to some comments (which are great, and the debate is appreciated): Genealogy doesn't bestow credentials, but can inform perspectives. Bringing it up aggressively and competitively is just as disingenuous as hiding it or being deliberately coy when it is relevant to a topic at hand. The background presented here is one direct influence on this blog, and so may be of interest (and even clarifying) to at least some people reading this.

The question was: Which city is preppier - Cambridge or Boston.  My reply would be, "Who cares. I'm Trad".  :0)

I've a spinal injury myself in the neck and I've been warned by the specialist to expect lots of problems in later life, most of the time its bearable, but when it starts aggravating with shakes in my right hand, tingling, loss of feeling, hot and cold sensations and acute pain, its hell for a couple of months. And then, as if by magic the symptoms vanish and I am okay for the next few months.

Re: Just Not Good Enough -

I'm hearing you 4F Hepcat.  My advice, ask your doctor which pain management specialist they would send their wife/partner/husband to or he would use,.  You get good, bad, indifferent and fucking awful days.  My specialist saved my life because of his and his staff's knowledge of pain. I find listening to the 1920s and 30s Blues cathartic when the pain is awful and of course Coltrane, Parker and Davis makes me mellow out and sleep easier.

I also take morphine which shows in some of my comments.

Very sorry to hear this. I have recently graduated from Tramadol to Morphine & it's changed my life. My bad back goes back 21 years now after a car crash in which I lost my 'pretty' looks and messed up that front tooth of mine that I've never bothered fixing. Pain is a terrible educator and led me down many blind alleys as I self-medicated to try to get some relief, turning a stomach ulcer brought on by too much work into a tumour in the process. Access to Morphine earlier would have made all the difference, but in England you have to 'earn' your prescribed pain relief - Only getting the good stuff a long way down the line.

I'm sympathetic to budgets and the dangers of addiction and the fear of the system being abused... But in my case the stystem didn't work. Give me pain and if the pain relief on offer is inadequate I will always top it up with whatever I can lay my hands on. The result is a ruined digestive system.
