That really is a stunning shirt, I've always admired Viyella but somehow they just don't seem to fit me.

As regards the Arran jumpers, I always felt they fit in with the Ivy cannon personally - it's easy to underestimate the gaelic connection/influence. Love those PTB with the wide cord too Mhalat, I'm desperate to get myself a pair in Cordovan but finances dictate otherwise at present sadly.

B_B - that shirt is a beauty, thanks for sharing!

Tim - thanks so much for your kind words. I don't know how or why it happened, but when I bought those shoes, they wound up being 30-40% off at the cash desk (this after some time saving too). I was shocked because, I had heard from another Alden merchant at some point that they do not tolerate markdowns, ever. Probably one of many ways they preserve their brand. Only explanation I can think of is that the shoes I purchased are a custom design made only for that particular shop, and so there was a loophole in the discounting rules.....

stanshall - I stand corrected on my spelling of Aran, thanks for the tip.

Am considering purchasing a guernsey sweater or two this winter. If I do, you may all rest assured I will purchase it from the Channel Islands, and avoid further controversy.

Re: Ivy League style for today

For older readers, Aran jumpers have an unfortunate association with The Clancy Brothers folk group.

The Dubliners on the original LP covers just used to wear Harris tweed jackets with a white shirt - a much better look.

Donegal tweed is much more versatile though they missed a trick by not getting a trademark like the Harris tweed orb.

Another theme is provenance. It matters to some people but not others. You can buy a genuine Guernsey sweater though other areas produce ganseys. Or you could just buy something called a Guernsey that looks OK.

Maybe you lot are right... I've not checked this fact properly on the internet...
However I did spend many summers on the isle of Arran where arran jumpers were worn by most on the island (in the 70's I may add).
My family has been in the wool trade for 50+ years and some of that has been selling Arran wool along with the patterns for said Arran jumpers . I deliverd hundreds of Arran jumper patterns to small wool shops ( now almost gone sadly) all over Scotland..
The OP said ARRan jumper - you lot are talking by about ARan jumpers - similar I grant, but also different if you happen to know the isle of Arran . Hence my comment that if one was visiting the isle of Arran ( stunning and unique place to visit btw) in Scotland you could easily buy a local Arran jumper as a true Scottish gift and just as 100% Scottish as a Shetland jumper or Harris Tweed jacket .

What's the differences in the knit?

Thanks, Berk! It's a vintage Bullock & Jones tie.

Sancho - ditto. That's one helluva sweater you got there, YoungIvy.

Autumn favourites: Old John Simons lightweight herringbone, O'Connells flannel shirt, navy knit tie, John Simons chinos, Paraboot apron shoes.

Done my annual fitness test at work today, then went for a run around the airfield straight after to emphasise how truly hard I am!

Beautiful sunny day in London, due to be 22c this weekend. Bicycle and motorcycle await.

Love that outfit woof, the tie/shirt combo is especially nice. We don't see plaids with ties enough. Looks beautiful with that herringbone...

Ha ha... I find that my fitness goals these days are making sure I can still button my pants and jackets so I don't have to buy a whole new wardrobe big_smile

Re: Ivy League style for today

Today: lounging around the apartment in heavyweight navy Kellsport sweatpants and an old gray LL Bean t-shirt... Later putting on an old and incredibly soft Bean 65/35 tattersall with c-buckle belt, chinos and blucher mocs to venture out into what is (for today at least) feeling like actual fall weather, around 64F...

Re: Ivy League style for today

woof, you're killing it! i find i also like wearing tartan ocbds at this time of the year. southwest ontario stays annoyingly warm (during the day) through this stretch of fall, and so i'm not quite ready to make the switch to flannel yet. miss the weather in blighty, for sure, though i may be the first to ever utter those words.

berkeley - your fitness goals are all too familiar.

barbour quilted waistcoat (actually just a beaufort liner. i like its shape more than lands end or bean or even barbour vest. it's cut like a waist coat, so it lacks the really big and chunky collar. it's also fleece with a nylon shell, rather than down, so more packable and adaptable in the rapidly changing weather)
polo university stripe ocbd (blue & white)
lands end traditional fit cords (burgundy)
red wing 875s (at least 10 years old now, and really looking it)
