There was actually this fella on Modculture  who had his bouffant back combed so tightly it was completely waterproof, and it only cost him the price of a haircut. So I'm not so sure it was us wasting time.

I'd have to say my Burberry keeps me dry in a quite harsh downpour, water rolls off it.

Do you live in a village Rob? I thought you lived in London. Though thinking about it now...

I'm talking about the nature of the fabric due to its construction, Mackintosh material is impervious to water because of the layer of rubber between the cotton, but Burberry does have a hyrdrastatic head, because if it breathes, at some point of saturation water will pass through it, it can be a very high amount,  I'm not sure what it is on Burberry, but I own both, and the Burberrys I have is from a period where it was still UK made, and not a piece of tat, and I would say it is great in terms of comfort, but isn't as waterproof.

Well that's fine, but I still think that if you were to borrow Marlowe's time machine and go back to the 60s, you would find Burberrys raincoats to be superior to those made by Macintosh.

I fear your knowledge of the two most favoured 18th century methods of waterproofing cotton, has as many holes in it as Thomas Burberry's rubberised gabardine.

I think we are about to see Talk Ivy split into two very distinct camps of preferred waterproofing here.

More like 3 camps. I'll be over in Marlowes pub not giving a fuck about any of it.

As long as you draw the line at camp waterboarding.

Camp watersports is ok though, we're not puritans after all.  Just remember to stay safe.

(And don't post any dodgy pics.)

Since I live in a dry climate I know little about raincoats. I'd find this one tempting

...if it was half the price.

That's an ideal coat for a fish gutter onboard a trawler. But not many trawler men gut their own fish now. Most just put them on ice and let Tesco do the rest.

Ach, gutting a fish in force 9 gale. It's a lost art.

Re: It's peeing down...it's windy... so what do we wear?

We were talking about car coats recently and a couple of good Wolsey ones have popped up at eBay.  I picked up a Wolsey one seemingly unworn in black for 25 and recently managed to get a plain black almost identical Barbour version too.  These seem good for those of us who can't carry off or don't like a full duffel coat.

I also tried the coats recommended at dufflecoatsuk but they were far too big and it had to go back.   It's a shame as it was a wonderful coat and can be viewed here http://www.dufflecoatsuk.co.uk/clearanc … -grey.html .  The sizings are huge but anyone on a larger side might find this a good option at a good price.  Thanks for the recommendation made in this thread about it anyway.

So here's the Wolsey one I got.

Re: It's peeing down...it's windy... so what do we wear?

Anyone discovered any funky new lines here peeps in the past 5years +?

I've lived in patagonia fleeces pretty much all winter under either Eddie Bauer parkas, Beanie State parkas, Hercules parka, Sears parka and Gloverall...

Would really love summat modern mind..you know...to keep my hand in..cos I'm so down with mountaineering/rambling/sensible middle aged shizzle, ya feel me?

There's loads of Patagonia I like..but not spunked moolah as yet..
I want waterproof too.. and not looking at raincoats here...
So - hit me.....well not literally.. unless you want a piece of me of course..
