If you tell me when your birthday is then, for your forthcoming 17th, I will buy you a dictionary. That will assist you with the meaning of Maestro and that of back-pedalling.

For now it suffices, I think, to say that back-pedalling means retreating from a proposition actually advanced. That is to say - not the one you put into my mouth by chopping my quotes up and fibbing.

This most recent back-and-forth is truly ridiculous.  The disagreement was clearly based on a fine (semantic?) distinction -- that of a 'sports jacket' vs. a 'hacking jacket.'  Marc, why don't you just admit that this distinction might actually have historical relevance and move on, rather than trying to prove your point?  Moreover, certainly it might be understandable that, as an American, a distinction between the two did not occur to you, or, alternatively, that perhaps you misread/misinterpreted Silkie's initial comment on the matter.  After all, he did not spell out the distinction in his first post on the topic, merely stated that 3 buttons were not traditional on a Sports Jacket.  Given the ill will between the two of you (or at least you to him), I think one could understand that you were looking for any mistake he might make.  However, if you re-read his comment and the subsequent reiteration of same, you aren't really doing yourself any favors (favours?) here.
