I am looking for something like the old NHS John Lennon, or Milky Bar Kid frames that I used to own.
I want a slightly larger frame to accommodate varifocal lenses. These seem to fit the bill or are there other options in this style in the UK?
I was going to order a pair of those "gold" framed shurons.
But I think I have decided on half frames.
edit: That would be the Rimways:: http://optometristattic.com/7172_Optometrist_Attic.htm
I have a pair of the tortoiseshell Revelations, as does Hepcat and Harpo I think.
Vic at optometrist attic is helpful in emails.
To my eye those are a lot larger than the Lennon NHS specs. Vic would I think be able to tell you about Lennon NHS specs.

I have black Ronsir Zyls and tortoiseshell AA406 both in 52mm.
I would like a wire frame in a similar size. AA406 needed tightening after a while but the Zyls are holding up well.
My NHS frames are much smaller but they were a great little trouble-free frame in their day.

mmh heppie - I guess some cats got it, some cats ain't.
Bump for this thread, just arrived from the US, a pair of the Shuron Ron Strong's. And they are big in keeping with the Ful-Vue moniker. Not ideal if you are in the -4/-5 myopia range like me = large lens and thicker too. Probably not a good idea to buy, currently at the opticians getting lenses fitted.
Heppie, from Vic?
I'm thinking of getting a pair of computer glasses, multi focal.
Thinking of getting the gold P3 and some rimways and a pair of black sidewinder fades. Or even a pair of regis. To see which fits best. Or for variety to keep in drawer for later.
I've got a big high nose so I need them to hang low, otherwise it's my eyebrows looking through.
From Shuron direct.
I ordered the 50mm lens width size, but should have gone for the 46mm or 48mm. I've the Shurons Ronsirs in the 44mm and these are too small as the temples don't go straight back, but have to flare out a bit. Most of my other glasses have 50mm identified for the lens width size. Mine are in silver.
Now I'm thinking I should have sent them back, but I've already taken them to the opticians at lunch time. In any event, they can be used for bike riding and in the sun as I've got the clip-ons and they're large enough to provide really good UV protection.
This is the danger when ordering on the internet and in particular with ordering glasses. Myopic dudes should always get the smallest lens width possible to avoid the inverted effect the lens has on the side of the face.
Same prices as the attic?
Old glasses never used to be as wide as the head and temples always angled out.
It's not a bad look. Nowadays I see hipsters in buddy holly glasses with the glasses about a foot wider than their scone.
You can also get extra width from the nose bridge rather than the lens width.

Dunno' they were USD$205 with courier to the Netherlands.
Vintage glasses were indeed much smaller as they were using glass and they would be extremely heavy with large frames.
Now I am convinced I should have sent them back. Bugger!
They are $70 usd from the attic
Bugger! x 2.
Well, I did get the clip-ons as well in that price. I've been placing them over my Ronsirs this morning and once again being reminded that this size is way too big.
sorry - i wasn't trying to be mean. It was uncalled for.
Did you have clip ons before ?
Do the clip ons suit all sizes and models?
Mine look like they might adapt.
I also have this other pair of clip ons with a nice spring on the bridge - they expand length ways - very light.
The Ms has converted to clip ons - she reckons they are great - her pair look great and have a spring loaded couple of things that slide down either side of bridge pads.
Its so good being able to just slip on the clip ons. (Hey I'm a rapper - slip on the clip on) and not carry two pair of specs.
Right, I have now taken delivery of my Shuron Ron Strongs in a smaller size i.e. 40mm lens size. Also a 42mm would be okay too, definitely would not want these any larger. A remarkable difference, they look superb. Like John-Boy Walton, except I'm 41 next week and bald.
Currently getting the larger size lens ground down from the 50mm size.
The lesson in this, confirmed by my optician, is that sizing round lenses is difficult and you can't rely on normal sizing.
I normally take a 47-50mm lens size range and if you are similar size to me, you need to go down significantly in the Shuron range:
Ronsirs = 44-46mm
Ron Strongs = 40-42mm
If anybody wants a pair of Shuron Ron Strongs with clip on shades in size 50-21-135. Please PM, you can have 'em for the postage costs.
I would not be looking any lower than 52mm for my big head. That is what my Anglo American 406 are and Shuron Ronsir too.
I quite like some of the larger 1980s frames too. Varifocals mean deeper lens proves useful.
I am not sure what size my NHS John Lennons were, but not big enough for varfocals IMO athough I am sure opticians would fit them if I asked.
Cable sides for a retro Milky Bar Kid look. Gold.
