Looking Smart

Hi all ,

Stumbled across this site today when searching for a tailor in London and quite enjoyed reading some of the threads, so Hello!

I have recently located to London and I work in the City of London. Outside work I tend to wear sports wear or something comfy for the garden, so my knowledge of what to wear in work is limited. I am young (26) so I am after a suit that is sharp and smart looking - thinking James Bondesque, without looking old and aged.

Before I came to London I went to my local tailor for a suit, with the intent on getting measured up and having a MTM suit. He kind of pushed me in the direction of a RTW suit with alterations (which was the cheaper option although I was willing to pay the £600 for the MTM suit) and after trying it on it looked great and his alterations seem to give me a very good fit. So I have a number of questions....

1) The RTW suit I ended up with is "Gibson London" - it has a pretty young feel to it which I like and it looks smart, does anyone know if this is a decent RTW suit? I payed 325 for it including alterations, is this a fair price?

2) I am now looking for a new suit to add to my collection - I quite like the look and feel of the Hugo Boss suits online - is this the way to go, RTW with alterations? I am normal size, 32 waist, 32 leg. This will be around 600-750 (from a quick look online) would I be better getting a MTM suit in London somewhere?

3) I earn decent money so dont mind paying whatever it costs for a cracking suit, I have read some good reviews about Graham Browne of London, what sort of cost am I looking at for a MTM there, and also what will it cost for a MTM at Savile row?

Finally, I had a moment of madness about a month ago after hearing about Raja Fashions (some Hong Kong tailor you meet in a hotel room and he measures you up - there was a review in the Evening Standard I think), I paid 350 for the suit and when it came back it is nothing like I wanted, its good for nothing except the bin. So on that note, I would be keen to stay away from tailors who are not based in UK without a good reputation.

I look forward to some replies and learning about the great world of looking dashing in a suit!

Huner.

Re: Looking Smart

3) I think Graham Browne is close to £1000 but it is bespoke rather than MTM. It is just off Bow Lane. I looked in over Christmas when they had a sale for a couple of days. There was only one bloke in the shop - not the fat one, the other one. Anyway, he was looking after some pensioners so I did not speak to anyone in there.

If you are a fairly standard fit I am not sure MTM is a great benefit. You see what you are getting with RTW and know what standard tweaks can do. Less chance of a surprise IMO.

You will get a wider choice of cloths with bespoke, obviously, and maybe MTM.

There are other MTM places around but I have no experience of them and you want something modern rather than traditional

Hello !

I'm a Londoner born & bred  - What sector do you work in, may I ask ?

The suit is now largely dead, especially with a tie. Unless you work in some kind of M.C. role for your company... Wheeled out to look the part as you make presentations..

Like a PG Tips monkey...

Re: Looking Smart

Thanks for the reply.

So I guess MTM is more beneficial for guys who are irregular in size where a RTW would come nowhere near fitting. Can you recommend any RTW brands that I should keep an eye out for?

£1,000 for a bespoke at Graham Browne sounds good to me, after looking, the 2.5k+ at SR is a little too much at the moment.

Thanks again, anyone out there know much about the Gibson I currently have? I like the fit and style of it, but dont know much about tailoring to elaborate more than that!

Re: Looking Smart

@Talk Ivy - I work at an Investment Bank, spend some time with clients at lunch so need to look sharp. Most people here wear suits with no tie - I dont really see anything else going on... /me looks around for clothes other than a suit.

I am tempted to ask some of the senior guys where they go - but to be fair, some of their suits look ill fitted and pulled out of my grand-dads wardrobe.

Re: Looking Smart

To go further - I honestly think that suits are plebian now in business in London. They're for M.C.s, Aspirants and Drones.

But maybe you work in a crap industry ?

'The City' (Nothing to do with the real London) is full of them...

And how odd it is to have all that money from a city job and yet so little freedom...

Re: Looking Smart

@talk ivy - had a quick look at those links (part1) and I am pretty sure I could get away with "westender" fashion here in the City. Is that what you are trying to show me?

Also I'm very unhappy that in the middle of a working day Investment Bankers are goofing off asking questions about suits online...

Re: Looking Smart

Hi Cityhunter,

I work for a company just a 20 minute train ride outside of Marylebone, we supply a range of brands, but typically the city gents take our Corneliani suits. RTW starts from £1100, then if you would like M2M there are a huge range of fabric swatches to choose from. For RTW we also have a tailor in store, so all alterations are done in house, he is a former employee of Tommy Nutter, and knows his onions. If you would like any further info, just let me know.

Regards.
