Re: Geezer Ivy

A new brewery is open in Wandsworth. At the Ealing beer festival they were offering an ale called 'Diamond Geezer'.
http://www.bythehorns.co.uk/DG.html

''A big bold, in your face, malty beer! A touch of sweetness to start, nuttiness to follow and hoppy-ness to finish. Give it a little time and let this beer develop and tantalise those taste buds with its powerful and delectable kick of Willamette hops. A complex copper coloured fusion of distinction. There’s a lot going on with this cheeky little beer, so take your time and sup it up.''

Maybe not for continental boulevardiers.

Most people yesterday obviously had no interest in clothes either.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Ealing was excellent. In my case, a group of old codgers sat round a table right beside the massive beer tent reminiscing and enjoying some fine ales in the sunshine.

They had run out of the very strong Fullers ales by the end but I usually stick to the weaker beers to pace myself.

Is there a finer beer festival in London? Kingston is nearer, but not as good. Back in the day, Catford used to be excellent. Great British Beer Festival at Olympia/Earls Court is now an overpriced waste of time.

Re: Geezer Ivy

I used to go to Olympia/Earls Ct every year until the last few...have a mate who runs a boozer in Kilburn so used to go to the opening day with a nice pass and could enjoy it all before the masses turned up....I'd be "riddled with alcohol" by about 5 in the afternoon he he...desperatley awaiting my second/third/fourth....winds....but as you say, no longer a cheap day out by any means...

A lot of pubs do em nowadays...was at one in Putney last year, just back from the river which was great..Bricklayers Arms..and that pub in the new St Pancras station puts on a good one...all the barrels outside on the concourse...
Andover Arms in W6 - an excellent Fullers pub put one on last year too..

Southampton Arms down from Kentish Town is highly recommended too...ale-tastic!!

Re: Geezer Ivy

Yes I know someone who used to take time off and get a season ticket for the GBBF. Then he would come down the pub after a session. Next day he would be off to the GBBF again. Then one year he said they charged him £3 just for the programme. If you go to after work it is 10pm before you know it and they are making announcements about closing.

Bricklayers is a brilliant pub I always go to their beerfests. The Rocket is a very good Wetherspoons on the other side of Putney bridge if the Bricky is too crowded(after a match at Craven Cottage). If you order food they bring your beers to the table for the rest of the session. No scumbags in there either - which is remarkable for a Wetherspoon.

My old darts team started going to the Southampton; not been myself but the Pineapple in the back streets was a decent Kentish Town pub.
Kilburn pubs are not what they were. Last time I was there was when the Luminaire was still open.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Samuel Smiths and Timothy Taylors seem to have taken over about 75% of the pubs in Soho. Horrible stuff that gives me a headache after about two pints. Recently a mate and I walked in and straight out of about of about six pubs round there trying to find somewhere that served a decent beer.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Sam Smiths have some truly beautiful pubs like the Princess Louise in Holborn. Their beer is cheap too. Unfortunately it does not taste great and they do not offer an alternative.

Timothy Taylor used to be on at the Bricklayers in Putney - the whole range not just Landlord. A lot of barrels were arriving in poor condition so the landlady Becky offered to run a van up to Yorkshire to collect the beers straight from the brewery and bypass the middleman. Timothy Taylor would not agree and the Bricklayers no longer stocks it.

Dog & Duck in Bateman Street used to be OK though I do not really drink in the area.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Sam Smiths use to have some good beers, their Austrian(?) lager was superb and I use to be impressed with some of their bottle ales with the exception of the India Pale Ale which they were marketing to eat with curries.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Not sure if Suggs from Madness has been mentioned much on this site but he makes a quote that many here can agree with

http://sabotagetimes.com/fashion-style/the-florsheim-imperial-wing-tip-kenmoor-brogue/

I assume Suggs has always shopped at J Simons et.al.
I think he might be considered a London Geezer and he wears much of the Ivy. Bit more so than that 'butterfly' Robert Elms.

He doesn´t really get a mention on here, probably because we will be accused of turning this into a Mod forum again, but Suggs is a top geezer.

My word, I enjoyed running through this again: E.U.R. on top form, with plenty of others contributing to the ding-dong.  Edith simply lit the blue touchpaper and more or less retired.
But I stand by what I said.  My contempt for 'geezerdom' is even more marked now than it was then.

This is the thread in which Yuca informed us he read the 'Guardian'.
One would never have guessed.
I believe to this day he's really Owen Jones.

Re: Geezer Ivy

What a strange thread.

I read the pieces I could and I'm none the wiser.

I appreciate there's a certain kind of look and attitude out there. You see it at football. Stone Island and jewellery. "Awright San."

Nothing to do with class. More a mannerism. Dated.

Don't really associate it with Ivy Clothing as not tribal enough. Why pay that much money when it hasn't got a massive logo on it.

Maybe it's confined mostly to London.

Re: Geezer Ivy

Ealing beer fest now charge £20 entry!

You cannot get canvas easily post covid. So it will be in a big top in the park rather than all around the sides. The council are also price gouging and requiring costly measures to protect the grass.

‘I assume Suggs has always shopped at J Simons et.al.

No aggression associated with Suggs either.

As it happens, I was killing time before lunch and looked into Ben Nevis window in Camden. Roamers Desert boots and Harringtons are now £42. One of the Madness band got chased all the way to Kentish Town after attempting to steal one from the shop.

Nice Greek meal. The red wine was a little too hot in this weather so I switched to beer. We used to use another Greek place a stones throw way. Much of it has now been converted to accommodation and it is far quieter in just the ground floor.

After a lengthy lunch some of us went on to ‘Tapping the Admiral’ which has decent ales. Lots of oldies at the bar. One of the bar staff was a bloke in a gymslip. Nobody seemed to regard it as unusual. Camden definitely cosmopolitan now. Greek community holding on, just down the road from the Greek Orthodox cathedral, but lots of tourists and blow ins.

Re: Geezer Ivy

We used to have a chap in this one-horse town roaming around in embroidered ballet slippers.  I saw him recently, now walking with the aid of a stick and sporting a beard like a stage conjurer.
The eyes of the average person appear to have glazed over in recent years.  Else they are giggling over 'Terence The Talking Dog' on Tik-Tok or whatever.
Exactly when did we become a nation of children and will North Korea eventually join in the fun?

Re: Geezer Ivy

The term Geezer, as discussed before, means different things to different people. As, I think USA Patrick has pointed out Geezer in America just means an old bloke. No violence involved.
I am an 'old' Geezer in English, English. In my crowd we talk about some Geezer as in some bloke.
I read an interview yesterday and Danny Dyer was mentioned as a really nice bloke. He is also a Geezer. His on screen persona is an obvious  exaggeration
I haven't thought about it before but maybe you have to be from London and surrounding areas to be a Geezer

Re: Geezer Ivy

I’ve got an overnight stay with friends in Romford in September, Romford is probably the Mecca of Geezerdom, I’ll be taking mental notes to share at a later date, haha

Re: Geezer Ivy

When I lived in North Romford my neighbours both sides were London black cab drivers so I was surrounded by Geezers. They were great characters but their one big flaw was they were both Arsenal supporters.
