Re: Brummell and beyond...

Books on the early 80's were written by Peter York and Robert Elms. York's book took the 'Preppy Handbook' as its model. Elms is lightweight, who if he is to believed was a soul boy, casual and a blitzboy in the same day.

And NO, I won't be typing anything from them up...smile

Re: Brummell and beyond...

I think doggie is using casual as a descriptor of a general tendency in clothing and formby is using it as a proper noun. Understandable. Its a cultural /UK thing. There were no casuals here at all iirc.

Formby I don't think doggie is referring to The Casuals or that movement. He will correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: Brummell and beyond...

I was actually kinda of straddling the line. I initially was using it generically, but I thought if the conversation went to the Casuals it'd be pretty useful for the time period I was thinking of.

Re: Brummell and beyond...

I think they are two different things. One, casualisation, is universal, the other, casuals, is regional specific.

I know. I started with one but left it ambiguous.

Evanescent youth culture holds little interest for me; especially when it is as old hat as this.

Here are some clips, that deal with Sloane from the BBC series 'British Style Genius' from a few years back:

Access may be limited to the UK, if so try a proxy.

^ Yeah, I got Expat Shield on standby because of all the UK stuff I tend to try and watch.

Sloane stuff I tangentially have heard of, I need to dig further in. Preppy in the states is what our Ivy brethern are doing for casual wear mostly. Polos, khakis, madras and boat shoes.

Re: Brummell and beyond...

Most excellent, I may try and track the book down soon myself, very engaging perspective.

I'm currently reading Peter Ackroyd's  London: A Biography , which I find hilarious, especially when the Middle English and Early Modern passages are worked in. Going to take a bit to get through though, so probably a decent amount of time until I get on to another book.

Re: Brummell and beyond...

I initially got into him with the smaller book he did about underground London. Good read, I will look for the Venice one, another favorite haunt.
