When I was a student in the late 80s to early 90s, it was impossible to go to a nightclub without hearing Love Cats. Normally towards the end of the night and regarded as some sort of high point of the evening. One of those tunes everyone loves. It is crap.

A lot of N soul is dross it's true, the majority in fact, but the scene did unearth some occasional beautiful tunes. I suppose an r&b fan who hates northern could claim many of the good tracks are r&b not northern, e.g. Walking Up a One Way St, Fortune Teller, etc.
