... on a shirt... inspired by our Jdemy's dislike of the Press offerings...
Any thoughts?
In fact, I know what he means - and one on each side is an absolute no-no for me. USA-made flannel shirts often remind me of the kind of Filson type work wear I came to dislike a few years ago. Carefully does it.
I also have to admit, I probably prefer Ralph Lauren shirts to Press.
The flap pocket is one of those things that I like the idea of more than the reality.. It’s part of the J Press heritage and therefore a detail that would instantly signal your Ivy orientation to a fellow devotee of the look. But they look a big incongruous under a jacket in my opinion.
In my experience the flap pocket is mostly useful as a signal that I got the shirt at Press, which may or may not impress the hell out of the one person in a thousand who picks up on it.
I only ever wore a shirt with a flap pocket, Press or otherwise, to carry money when travelling.
I have a Gant with flap pocket. Dress Gordon tartan.
I like the flap. It’s a nice detail. But I’d swap it for a slightly larger collar
I agree with Woof, a flap pocket with a jacket doesn't work for me, only had a couple of JS flap pockets and moved them out quickly,
Is any kind of breast pocket absolutely necessary? I actually quite like one on a polo shirt (Ralph Lauren did them - and Hartford?) because they're 'different'. But with a button-down? What are you going to keep in there, your pet mouse? Keys in right hand pocket, wallet in inside jacket pocket, spectacle case in right-hand jacket pocket. Oh, a carefully folded note for tipping.
Maybe, as Jimbo would have put it.
Name tag?
Pen? If you weren’t so petrified of the inevitable leakage
I have amassed a few flap pocket shirts. Originally I bought them at Ralph not knowing the Press connotations.
I've subsequently bought them from both Press and John Simons. I must admit I like them a lot.
Being a Brit they feel very American to me.
The single flap pocket isn't something that's readily available on the UK high street so they feel a bit more special.
I like this style when I'm not wearing a jacket or sweater so that you instantly see the difference from a regular shirt. Simply adds a bit of interest.
I also have a few shirts with the single flap pocket. Gant, Ralph, John Simons, Madras popover et al. I find them too fiddly and a bit over the top. I used to travel a lot so I appreciated an open top pocket where I would put my boarding pass, ticket, passport. Maybe not so important now.
On a board shirt or overshirt I think double flap pockets are essential for the look and for practicality.

I use to do a fair bit of overseas business travel and an open top pocket was essential for me , an ocbd was good on a long haul to keep the a/c chill off, not so good when you touched down in Singapore.....
Staxfan,
The perennial problem of leaving a cold UK airport and touching down in sunnier climes. I was at Manchester Airport on a typical Easter weekend flying to Florida. The lady sitting next to me was wearing Ugg boots, a wool sweater dress and opaque tights. She looked lovely. I daren't think the shock to her system after a 9 hour flight when she touched down in Orlando.
