Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

The Ivy Style website has written another editorial/(advertorial?) for the Essex Pants made by The Andover Shop, and I couldn't help but notice the rather fawning praise in the comments from certain Talk Ivy members. I believe AFS has already stated that someone posting under "A Fine Sad Man" was not him, but I couldn't help but wonder if that were also perhaps true (or untrue, perhaps I should be saying) for the other commenters. The comments come across as a bit odd to me and not entirely in "character" as it were.

http://www.ivy-style.com/handcrafted-dignified-with-institutional-memory.html

You'll have to forgive me if my implication here is incorrect but I think it's worth a look given how driven Ivy Style has been lately in drumming up business for their advertisers.

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

Right on cue, the following comment appears, which strikes me as a rather clumsy and obvious attempt to mimic a cartoonish British vernacular:

A Fine Sad Man | July 1, 2022 at 6:33 pm | Reply
Wore mine out to dinner today. Spilt mushy pea juice all over ’em. Rushed to little boy’s room and sponged and dried with hand dryer. Now as good as new. And the dinner was beautiful by the way lads. Now these khakis really have my name written all over them.

At the moment many of the posters seem to be from here. Are they really? Who knows. Was Hardbopper ever a name here?

What I do know is that I have tried to post several times and have yet to succeed. The new guy must spend a lot of time checking before publishing the comments.

After a careful reading, I reckon that  at least one of these IS posters with TI names is JB. As you say, Summerdad, these are adverts.

Even as I type, lawyers representing TRS and myself are sifting and assessing.  My attorney Bernie reckons there's enough evidence there to hang any man - but only after he's been driven roughshod through the bankruptcy courts, his wife and children condemned to buggery (sorry, that should read beggary) and TRS is handed a large cash settlement plus the residence of his choice in Tuscany.

Those comments are obviously piss takes of TI posters rather than the posters themselves. Not particularly good piss takes unfortunately, although to be fair AFS is beyond satire. I assume the aim is to enrage those being mocked, although personally I can't imagine any of them caring.

The person responsible is probably someone from the US who is triggered by the very concept of UK ivy fans. IS used to be full of such types.

Some suspect the comments to be from the new IS guy. Personally I doubt he knows of TI's existence. He's not even interested in ivy clothes, let alone the online ivy clothing world.

AFS is both above, beneath, beyond and even behind satire (but, in fact, as I believe Lindsay Anderson once said, satire is all too often confused with facetiousness in western society, where targets are easy and rarely bite back: satire is more often to be found in 'totalitarian' set-ups.  Even Lenny Bruce must have earned a dollar or two).  Yuca, however, should learn to a. put a smile on his face b. get laid at least once whenever there's an R in the month and c. drive up and down Radford Boulevard in a high-powered sports car, the stiff breeze blowing through his wig.

On a more 'serious' note, TRS is well known for his dislike of 'dowdy' chinos/khakis, whereas Patrick is a fan.  TRS is more of a raw denim/white Levis man.  At my time of life, however, I've settled for two pairs of jeans and four of chinos (plus a couple of pairs of USA-made cords), plus wool for smarter occasions (such as visiting the bookmaker, my married mistress, walking the whippet etc.).  Pointless doing anything else really as my weight is still dropping.  Finally, like Yuca, I will be back in a 28.

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

My cousin was visiting a few weeks back. In summer I am always on the verge of going fishing, and as such tend to be dressed in something in a khaki color. My cousin asked if I ever wear anything that is not khaki-colored. "Sometimes I slip in a little olive drab," I said.

I prefer "slouchy" to "dowdy." The latter sounds like it comes with mildew.

I never look at Ivy Style. I briefly corresponded with Christian Whosie many years ago, I forget about what, and that's the extent of it.

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

'Frumpish' is another word I recall being used many years ago, although in a more positive context (and, quite possibly, referring to the English - for which read, Certain Parts Of The Capital Mostly - take on Ivy dressing, which can be quite specific).  I took it at the time to be a more or less 'Counter-Mod' concept - and that's become of increased importance in England (again, mostly London) as the revivalist 'Mods' begin to resemble baby elephants with white hair and wrinkled scrotums no doubt.  Their Weller adoration knows no bounds.  They even stood in line in sub-zero temperatures to buy his 'Christmassy' sweaters FPS.
So: a little bit of frumpy does you good.  Rhymes neatly with rumpy-pumpy.

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

This Parish already has, or had, its House Satirist - the great wag himself, The Beatnik. In fact I'd say that although we all get a bit bored, and boring, on this forum, the amount of genuine wit, insight and wisdom generated over the 16 years or so of its existence is really quite remarkable. Particularly when compared to the usual utter bilge out there on the web, including of course all the other menswear websites. So we say we are 'Talking Ivy' here, but perhaps Ivy in this context is a metaphor for curiosity about a whole era, history and the many ways of thinking about many things.

Voice? The quality of the cloth and the handwork is whispering to me now chums. Listen carefully. You will hear it to

These are most excellent. I’ve yet to see them on any of the hundreds of instagram influencers I obsessively follow, I’ve got to broaden my horizons a bit it appears! Pictures, as always, tell the complete story! Of course well chosen words help! I think in years to come chinos like these will appreciate in value like rare northern soul vinyls. Sweet!

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

I'm having a hard time imagining anyone other than JB writing those comments. I think it's safe to assume it's likely to be one culprit, and the primary purpose of the comments seems to be heaping praise upon the advertisers and the editorial skills of John Burton rather than taking the piss out of Talk Ivy commenters. It also wouldn't be out of character given his background:

Parents Still Chasing Refunds, Music Customers Out of Luck
https://patch.com/new-york/bedford/arts-center-refunds-slow-music-customers-out-of-luck

Jordan Malmed of Cross River placed a flute and trombone on consignment with Bramson's Music when it was still located in Mt. Kisco. After reading the he visited the Yellow Monkey Village in Cross River, where Main Street Arts founder John Burton had moved the music store's inventory after purchasing the business.

"There were no sign of any instruments there," said Malmed, who visited the location several times early this year, hoping to recover his property. "These belonged to my little girl. We are not a wealthy family that can shrug away the loss of these instruments that are worth $2,000."

And as if that wasn't bad enough, it gets worse:

"People v. John Burton-Schepmoes - Defendant was arrested on October 27, 2015, after a preliminary investigation into his "The Brookings Mediation Firm" located in Carmel, NY. He was indicted and ultimately pled guilty to one count of Grand Larceny in the 4th Degree (a class E felony), one count of Petit Larceny (a class A misdemeanor), and one count of Unauthorized Practice of Law (an unclassified misdemeanor). Burton was sentenced to five years’ probation and, as part of his sentence, ordered to pay restitution in the amount of $30,000.00 to his victims.

"Extensive Investigation continued into Brookings Mediation’s practices as more information and former clients of Burton became known to the District Attorney’s Office. As a result, additional charges were filed and he was again arrested on November 15, 2016. Burton pled guilty on February 1, 2017, to two counts of Grand Larceny in the 3rd Degree (a class D felony). Sentencing will be on March 16, 2017, at which time Burton will be sentenced to a concurrent term of five years probation, and ordered to pay an additional $39,776.32 in restitution to victims."

https://www.putnamcountyny.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2017/05/Annual-Report-District-Attorney-2016.pdf

I'm not saying someone guilty of stealing tens of thousands of dollars from people should be treated as a capital offense, but I think it's safe to say that he's not someone that should be given the benefit of the doubt. The idea that his writing has been praised by "hundreds of thousands" of people and that he is "well known" for pretty much anything is a bald-faced lie:

"John Burton lives in Bedford NY, and is a touring singer/songwriter during summers and vacations.  His blogs have been read and praised by hundreds of thousands, combining a sense of humor with a mandate of inclusivity.  Burton insists on maintaining the Ivy aesthetic in the strictest sense while encouraging self expression.   Burton is also well known for his work in the advocacy of understanding and appreciation of all aspects of mental health, and his former career in corporate turnaround."

Yeah, it's definitely the same John Burton. He has an old Twitter account where he posted about the firm. There's also an early post on that Patch website announcing his project with a photo:

Yes. It's the same JB. How ironic that he couldn't just go with the 'Just clothes ' motivation for Ivy style clothes and ventured into mindset and morality.

Re: Talk Ivy Members on Ivy Style

And there was me thinking the new IS guy was unaware of this forum. The 'satirical' posts aren't very funny so they could well be by him. On the other hand, they are readable - which suggests not. Maybe he only goes into unreadable mode when he's trying to be a 'writer'.

The info about his shady past is very interesting. I read recently on IS:

'In the course of this year, we  have QUADRUPLED the site’s monthly traffic (unique readers), we have boomed on FB to the point where our engagement rate is higher than GQ and Esquire’s combined.'

I must admit I was a bit surprised by that. Knowing his track record for dishonesty, the above may well be fiction. Certainly his claim that his blogs have been 'read by hundreds of thousands' is bizarre. Surely if that were the case he would mention the more successful ones.

'How ironic that he couldn't just go with the 'Just clothes ' motivation for Ivy style clothes and ventured into mindset and morality.'

Exactly.

Obviously there's nothing wrong with someone with a criminal past trying to reinvent themselves. (Quite the opposite.)

I'm just waiting for the latest Volkischer Beobachter to arrive from a small town near Munich and The KKK Monthly from Baton Rouge.  I can then happily set aside The Sun, The Mail and last weeks News Of The World and get down to some real race-baiting.
