Testing Customer Service

Good day Gents,
I've been a bit quiet on the forum recently as even in retirement I've been pretty busy... !

Back to Ivy Talk.... As posted before my go-to shirts are Gitman's, I bought a l/s linen in my usual size 'L' from the 'Great Divide' in June / July, when it arrived (stupidly) I didn't try it on as the sizing of Gitman shirts is consistent, always 23" p2p, so it was just hung in the wardrobe until a suitable occasion to wear it which was my Wife & I's wedding anniversary in August, I put it on and it swamped me, on checking the sizes on the website and measuring the shirt it was clearly an XL and not L as labelled, to me anyway, it was an obvious mis-labelling error in the factory which I guess can happen. I had emails & phone calls with the retailer but basically they didn't want to know as I was outside their time frame for returns as per their return policy. But they passed on to me a contact at Gitmans , so I've been exchanging emails with the guy there, earlier this week he said he couldn't help and could only suggest I try and shrink it ! I replied this was a non starter and said I expected better from them, overnight I've had a reply where he states he ' understands my frustration' and will be in their factory 30/09 and will see if they can replace or have more fabric, So I will wait and see, I guess if it doesn't get resolved with Gitmans I can always put it on ebay probably at a loss, hey-ho,

As an aside in recent months I've been taking a look at the ' The Ivy League Group' on FB, some good & interesting postings on there , not sure if it's me but to me some of the looks & items for sale are pushing the boundaries of Ivy, well to this old trad anyway !

Re: Testing Customer Service

I bought a navy blue pop over ocbd from John Simons about 2  years ago. I bought a medium as every other shirt I had from them was the same size.

12 months after the purchase I discovered the fit was more akin to a small. Possibly a mis-label.

I mentioned this to Sean during a visit to Chiltern Street and he immediately sorted out the correct size - even though I didn't have the offending shirt with me. He simply asked me to send it back to him at the earliest opportunity.

Quality service is an area that JS excels in. I have loads of examples from them making a one off overcoat for me to quickly getting a cotton suit to me for a wedding.

As I get older I find that places that don't provide a good customer experience I quickly disregard no matter how attractive the merchandise.

Re: Testing Customer Service

Yes, definitely agree about JS. That was one of things I noticed when I first visited. I wanted to change two items, a pair of trousers that were far too slim in the thigh to be comfortable, and a cord shirt that had clearly sat in the window and developed lines where the fold marks had bleached in the sun. Despite not having the receipt and both having been bought several weeks before, John took them back without a moment’s hesitation, nor even an examination. He just took my word for it. Service like that deserves loyalty in return.

Schoolboy error Stax. You should always try on all clothes as soon as you get them. I'm a clothesaholic, like many here, and the thrill for me is trying on the new clothes immediately even if the item may end up in the wardrobe for months, sometimes years, before I wear it again. I noticed that you are a Gitman shirt fan. I don't own any myself but many ,nearly new, Gitman shirts end up on Marrkt .Not you off loading them Stax?

I always try the JS shirts in the shop because a few years back their sizing of shirts was all over the place and I nearly got caught out by assuming the label size was correct.

Re: Testing Customer Service

You’re right Robbie, a schoolboy error for sure, no it’s not me offloading Gitmans on Marrkt, but there seems to be more added almost on a daily basis, they’re probably losing their appeal with the younger buyers, I’ve got most base items covered with Gitmans, so it needs to be something that catches my eye to buy anything new and it needs to be discounted as well! , basic OCBD’s start around £185 now, but the quality is excellent,

Robbie

Yes, JS shirts in the past were all over the place size wise.

Sometimes the collar was spot on and the cuffs would be too tight.

I think since the creation of the Ivy Shirt spec they have been more consistent - but it always pays to try shirts on before putting into the Ivy Store Room.

I had a Gitman Vintage a couple of years ago but found them a bit neat. It was a real shame as the fabric was superb

Re: Testing Customer Service

I've only ever had 3 JS shirts, one passed onto my Son,(he's probably binned it), an early madras which I binned and currently a wool/flannel from a couple of years ago, but TBH I'm not comfortable with the collar, just that bit too long for me really, Alvey - I've never found the Gitmans too neat, I wear an L which is roomy enough for me, P2P 23", each to their own we're all built differently particularly as we advance in years ! I've seen the odd ' vintage' Gitman is 46CS, I reckon they'd like to stock them but Trunk a few doors along have been stocking them for years and I'm guessing Gitmans wouldn't want 2 retailers a few doors apart both selling their shirts, they'd certainly be an upgrade on the new BD Baggies @ £150 +,

Re: Testing Customer Service

Stax

what collar size do you take?

The PTP on the large Gitman would work for me if the collar was 15.5 or 16.

I love the Kamakura VI but wish the collar fit was a bit neater. I get a nice body fit  on a 16.5 but the collar is too roomy for my liking.

Re: Testing Customer Service

Alvey -

On the size chart it says the collar size is 16.5 for a size L , I think this is about right, but on my older oxfords that have been washed a few times they feel like the collar has shrunk a bit which oxfords seem to do over time as we probably all know, I’m a 16 - 16.5 in the neck so they work for me , they maybe a tad big for 15.5 - 16,

Re: Testing Customer Service

Another thought Alvey, if you're comfortable with ' pre-owned' shirts there are always plenty of Gitmans on Maarkt at around £60, and they take returns ,

Re: Testing Customer Service

Update on the wrong sized shirt - I have been exchanging emails with a guy called Chris Olberding @ Gitmans who I've discovered is the CEO for sales, I won't go over the various emails but I think I've worn him down !, yesterday he emailed me to say they had some fabric and would make me a new shirt if I paid the shipping, I replied that I would but what about the wrong size shirt I have ?, waiting to hear back, if he says just keep it I can move it on and should be able to cover the shipping costs and any potential taxes on the new one they send me, if this all works out I will of course be pleased and would give a ' thumbs up' to customer service @ GV USA, they will retain my ' brand loyalty ',
