Drinking in the afternoon is the reason we all became self employed (if we did), isn't it?
Tricky when the wife is at home though, so I recommend pretending to have the flu so you can soak yourself in hot toddies during those dead hours between a late lunch & doing the school run.

^ A bit fancy, but I'm sure it would do the trick.

Personally I'd just whack on the kettle and splosh some hot water onto some Whiskey. I like Highland Park, but it does stain the china as it's so peaty. Jiff lemon is good enough I find & if you want to add sugar, cloves & butter then you really belong in the Giant vibrator & not the manly, dusty world of my study.
... 3.30pm now & the light is softly turning to gold outside... Softly ticks the clock from above the boarded up fireplace... My Corduroy armchair is starting to mould to me now - Or I am starting to mould to it... But I don't think that my bottom will ever be as big as my Uncle George's...

I'm a fan of the traditional North German stiff grog myself (there are a lot of poncy grog recipes out there but the true recipe is simple - dark (or golden) rum, sugar to taste, and as much or as little hot water as you need. More rum and less water = stiffer grog).
The Stone Fence -- whiskey (usually bourbon) and cider -- is often referred to as America's first cocktail, and is equally good hot or on the rocks. It is traditionally made with hard cider, though I typically use fresh cider from the farmer's market. Can be fancied up, as The White Dog does, with a bit of cinnamon-sugar around the rim.
Quite nice on a blustery day.
Cheers,
